Today, the elderly face some very bleak realities—failing health, fear of an uncertain future, feeling of uselessness or loneliness, meager living conditions—and ministerial families are not exempt. Sometimes they are forced to make some difficult choices. Imagine having to decide between heating your home and eating or between purchasing much needed medicine and paying your living expenses. Thankfully, not all retired ministers or companions are faced with such dire choices. Many have made provision for their retirement, but some still live below the poverty level.

To meet these special needs, a new assistance ministry called "Helping Hands" has been established. A Christian foundation has joined hands with the Church of God to make this ministry possible. This one-time grant is intended to glorify God by practically ministering to Church of God retired ministers and widows who live at or below the government-established poverty level. These funds are specifically intended to reimburse monthly costs for medication.
